Architecture in the Former Yugoslavia

These structures were commissioned by Josip Broz Tito, president of Yugoslavia throughout the 1950's until his death in 1980. These structures were built to represent the "strength and longevity of the Social Republic" and to recognize the various WWII battles. Once popular structures, the pieces became largely neglected and forgotten during the brutal breakup of Yugoslavia throughout the 1990's. Photographer Jan Kempenaers photographed the structures recently and named his series Spomenik – The End of History. I was super excited to find these while browsing the web. Will make it a priority to go see some of these this summer while I roam the various countries that once made up the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia.
